About

Dr. Rivero is an applied econometrician currently investigating novel modeling approaches towards challenging settings of unobserved heterogeneity. Examples include household-level consumption data of addictive goods and historical data on larger units such as nations. Their most recent work includes panel/longitudinal data analysis on economic agent behavior allowing for heterogeneous effects on an outcome of interest. He is also interested in the joint measurement of inequality along several economic indicators.

Teaching

ECON 6730 Econometrics 1

Currently taught every Fall, this course trains PhD/masters students in advanced statistical inference. This course begins with the theory of random variables as data-generating processes essential for modern machine learning and causal inference. The remainder focuses on data: modeling, understanding the role of sampling, applying a law of large numbers or central limit theorem, and choosing and implementing an estimator, e.g., maximum likelihood, least squares, etc. The high-level goal is to equip students with the knowledge necessary to effectively conduct and evaluate empirical research.

Ideal Student: Must have knowledge in Differential and Integral Calculus; experience in any programming language or statistical software is recommended. An ideal student is interested in an area that utilizes probability and statistics extensively (e.g., econ, engineering, management, finance, and data science).

ECON 2010 Intermediate Microeconomics

Currently taught in both Fall and Spring for undergraduates. Intermediate Microeconomics is a course that is designed to broaden skills in economic reasoning and analysis. This course provides the tools to analyze consumer behavior, firm strategy and their interaction in markets. Students who complete this course will have mastered topics that complement their existing expertise, positioning them for success in our increasingly fast-paced and data driven world where an understanding in economics is indispensable.

This course also prepares students for popular coursework in ECON such as ECON 4220 Applied Game Theory, ECON 4270 Behavioral Economics, ECON 4170 Health Economics & Policy,  ECON 4960 Energy Economics & Policy, ECON 4290 Economics of Biotechnology and ECON 4230 Environmental Economics.
