Research
Research in the Linhardt lab focuses on complex carbohydrates. Glycoprotein, proteoglycans, and other glycoconjugates are prepared by fermentation using recombinant technology, extraction from tissues, or by chemical and enzymatic synthesis. After determining the structure of these molecules, his group studies their biological activities. Research in the Linhardt group has many focuses, including the mapping of the glycome, embryonic stem cell proteoglycan glycomics, structural biology studies, GAG sequencing using mass spectrometry (MS), the specificity and kinetics of protein-carbohydrate interactions, the medical application of nanomaterials, and chemical and enzymatic synthesis of carbohydrates.

The Linhardt Research Labs
In response to the Heparin Contamination Crisis, our group partnered with several others to begin bioengineering Heparin from bacteria. Together with Dr. Liu of UNC, we successfully created a synthetic Heparin using enzymatic synthesis. Today, Dr. Linhardt is internationally known for his research on the study of bioactive carbohydrates, particularly the complex polysaccharide heparin.
