About
Lucy T. Zhang, Ph.D. received her B.S from Binghamton University and obtained her M.S and Ph.D from Northwestern University. She spent 3 years as an assistant professor at Tulane University, until Hurricane Katrina. She then joined as a faculty in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering at RPI. Her research focuses on computational mechanics with special emphasis on fluid-structure interactions, computational biomechanics, and multiphysics-multiscale simulation approaches.

Research
Prof. Zhang's research focuses on developing advanced computational methods and algorithms that simulate the behaviors of complex physical biomechanics and engineered systems. In particular, these methods are developed for multiphysics and multi scale problems. Her work has broad and impactful applications, including biomechanics, tissue mechanics, enhancing medical technologies, and designing optimal engineered materials under extreme conditions. These simulations are designed to be highly accurate, efficient, and reliable, enabling engineers and scientists to investigate phenomena that are difficult or impossible to replicate experimentally. By translating theoretical models into practical computational tools, she accelerates the development of safer, more effective solutions across diverse industries. Her recent interests include developing quantum algorithms for computational fluid dynamics (CFD), aiming to leverage quantum computing’s potential to solve large-scale, nonlinear problems more efficiently than classical approaches.
